I almost posted the same thing on here last week. I ish I could tell you what I did, but I really just kept messing with it until I got lucky. God speed.

Step one is to take the chain off the bike
Untangling it should be easier after that!!!

Just take the chain off!!

just work it. it’s a chain. or……………………….. LBS. none of us are good at everything. but learn we can. LBS.
an aside, remember old coiled phone cords, and when one spot flipped the loop??? that is unfixable!.

Waxed chain is clean chain

Push the loops back towards the center. You cannot pull them out, you must make the loops larger until they allow one side to slide through the other.

I came across someone whose chain did this during a ride. Nobody could figure out how to fix it, and somehow nobody had a chain tool to just take it apart.

Options:
1. Find the master link, pop it off, remove the chain and untangle it. Might need a new master link.
2. Find loops that are next to each other that turn in the opposite direction (clockwise vs counter-clockwise). Push those together and slide them past one another and they’ll magically disappear.
For (2), it looks like your chain is off the front chain rings. Once you’ve got most of the loops merged, you’ll still have an odd tangle likely. Loop around the small chain ring and continue loop merges.

Disconnect it and start from scratch. Easiest way, plus you sort out any stiff links

had the same problem last week. guy at the shop figured it out real quick 😅

Oh yes. It’s a mess. Stop using oil lube and switch to pure wax and you won’t ever end up with grimy hands. Personally, I use Squirt drip lube for ease of use.
🤣yes I do know the chain is tangled but honestly…

All the assumptions I’m making in my mind about you and this situation are fucking great. If they weren’t terrible, I’d share.

Best advice i have is make the loops meet each other

Lmao I’ve been there. Best I can tell, the laws of physics were temporarily broken and there is no solution. Whenever this happens to me I just break the chain, straighten it out, and connect it again

I had this happen before, but not to this degree! I just kind of shook the bike which then shook the chain loose. Also put it on the big ring if you can and pedal back and forth a bit to shake it loose.

I had this problem yesterday. It feels crazy and impossible….until it fixes itself. I’m not 100% sure what move put things right, but it was more like turning a t-shirt right side out than like untangling a snarl. Kind of rotate the chain around the long axis and floop it about.
Also, if you DO have a master link–that’s a link that can pop apart–your life just got a lot easier. The master link looks different from normal links, and you don’t need a tool for it.

You have to just play around with it. If you take your wheel off try to keep it around the chainring at least. I’ve done this before on a non quickly chain. It’s irritating to fix without breaking the chain, but if it got in that state you can get it back to normal.
