  1. top cap should be snug, looks like the stem is not seated corretly. loosen, realign, see if it sits snug

  2. Looks like you have no stem spacers fitted.

This means there is no preloading of the headset.

Have a look at YouTube for how to install a threadless headset. It’s much easier to see it in a video than have me try to explain!

Looks like you are potentially missing spacers (black circular pieces) that go on top of the steering tube. These are what the disc on top with the bolt oin tightens onto to create tension. These are probably in the box somewhere.

If you don’t know anything about bikes, it’s a really good idea to have someone who does assemble it. It’s a safety thing. I would start my knowledge journey with maintaining a bike that is already assembled well.

  5. Take it to a shop. If you know nothing about bikes you could have made other mistakes that compromise the safety of the bike.

Do you have a torque wrench? If not you should not be doing a DIY bike assembly.

  6. You need to put spacers between the stem and the preload cap, or cut the fork. Take it to a bike shop

If you don’t understand headset preload you shouldn’t be learning on someone else’s bike. Learn on your own bike, make your own mistakes, then do it.

Or take it to a local bike shop. They will do everything properly. Most shops won’t let a bike leave the store if it is not safe to ride or will declare it unsafe and wash their hands of it.

    Don’t risk your child’s safety!

Not successful. Get someone who has a tiny bit of a clue what they are doing check it over before you give it to your kid. That’s assuming you want your kid to be safe.
