Friend of mine wanted to hand me his old, neglected bmx. It’s been sitting outside and has some rusty parts and I would love to “restore” it but I actually have no idea about bikes. Would love the experience of that project as well but I’m tight on money.
Is it worth it and possible to get it back on the streets and good looking with a budget?

The seat is a mess but everything else is just light surface rust. Definitely a solid bike still. Hell the seat may clean up just fine too.
Shit. Pressure wash it, lube up parts and replace the chain. Good to go
I don’t see why not, It would be a fun project! You’ll definitely need a new chain though, that one is cooked. I’d take it all apart, give everything a good clean, grease everything that needs it. If you’re unsure on how to do anything YouTube will have an abundance of how to’s!
I kinda dig the moss seat not gonna lie.
It would go with my shrimp and fish tanks aesthetic..
A soak in an oxyalic acid (aka deck bleach)bath will help clean up that rust and leave the paint and stickers alone.
If it was free, and you have a little free time then yeah it’s worth it! Even if you have to replace parts like chains and hardware that’s still cheaper than buying a bike. Also a can of black gloss/ matte paint goes a long way to bring some parts back to life.
Yeah definitely. Get some new hardware and a new chain and probably a new seat if that one won’t clean up. If the tires hold air you’d probably be OK riding on them but I’d replace them sooner than later
Clean up the rust and lube up everything and it’s fine. Maybe replace your axle bolts tho
