I was looking into getting a suspension seatpost for my bike but my local bike shop said it’s impossible since my seatpost isn’t circular.
Is there anything that would fit? Why are non-circular seatposts a thing?

You currently have the only seatpost that will fit that frame.
You are out of luck I’m afraid. D shaped seatposts exist to offer some compliance while seated. They do work in this regard but it’s limited. Unfortunately it’s also proprietary and I doubt there is enough of a market for anyone to consider engineering a dropper/suspension post.
