Hi! I’m planning my first bike tour, a 10 day trip in France, and was looking for some advice about my bike as i’m very new to the whole cycling thing.
I brought it on facebook marketplace last month, have taken it for a few rides since with a couple of issues. The rear derailleur has been swapped the a shimano, whereas the rest of the set is campagnolo, the bike shop says that i’ll have to replace the whole set for around £400 to get it running smooth and like new, whereas the guy I brought it from says the increments are the same so i’m welcome to bring it to him to tune the gears.
When I ride the bike, it skips a couple of gears, and also grinds when i’m in the fastest gear, but I can ride it fine with all the weight on the bike. I’m not looking for perfect, I just want to get around France and have a good time – my concern and question for you all is, do you think the bike will stay in one piece and be an enjoyable experience? Or should I invest in what I’ve mentioned?
Thank you for reading and for your help!

Nobody ever regretted fixing their gears before a long trip. “OH NO I wish I had missing gears and grinding, it would have made things much more interesting and fun.”
Get the guy to work on it. if that doesn’t fix it then take it to the shop. Or get another used £400 bike.
