  1. Generally speaking a reputable U-lock or chain is go to option. for specifics I would look at the bike insurance requirement sheets

I like my kryptonite U lock and a hiplock gold. I haven’t had any problems yet but I also am lucky with not needing to leave my bike out too often.

Cable locks < chain lock < U-lock. (In general)

You have a cable lock. I’d at least move up to a decent chain lock, if not a U-lock.

I personally like ABUS locks, but you may or may not have access to them.

This is what I lock my e-bike with to my car rack, at cafes, or while grocery shopping. This is not something I’d let sit for hours at a time. For that, I’d use this AND a U-lock.

  3. ebikes are $2000 on a cheap cable = easy to snip or grind. There are some very huge locks that are so thick that a 3 inch grinder can not cut them. Some have thick steel, some aluminium or strong plastic = $300-500, also heavy. I never ever leave mine, except at cafe etc where it is beside or I can watch through the window. The only cure is a paid attended lot, one of those huge pay boxes you can place the bike inside that use a phone app to unlock (until it gets hacked?)

Avoid cable locks at all costs. You can cut through them with garden shears and 60 seconds of elbow grease. Kryptonite and Litelock U Locks are heavy duty and will standup against an angle grinder more than any cable or masterlock type brand of U lock

If a thief wants it, a thief is going to take it. Sadly that is the reality. That being said those can be cut with a pair of pocket size angle snips. There are some very strong options but strong usually comes with heft. And even those can be penetrated. While nobody spends the time of day to stop the thieves.

  6. Sorry for your loss, but cable locks are very easy to get through.

Spend the money on a solid ULock, and beefy chain, it’s not stopping a very motivated thief, but it’s not going to be a cake walk like a cable.

  7. Shifter just dropped an episode on youtube about locks and how to lock your bike effectively, and I recommend watching it.
