Hey,

I am about to switch from my Endurace to my dream bike the Aeroad in the coming months. I know, that I will buy the SLX 8 model, but cannot decide to wait for the Speed version or just buy the ‘normal’ one.
Long story short, I have started to train for triathlon races, and before I buy a dedicated tt bike I thought it would great to first upgrade my road bike to an aeroad and try triathlon out with the new cockpit with the TT bars.

Now I have 45 mm deep ERC1400 on my endurace and have no issues with it at all as I am heavy rider around 84kgs. Is there anyone who is in the kind of same boat? Any advice, or just buy which one comes first and forget about the wheels or upgrade later?

Thanks

  1. Hi yup im in the same boat.

But i already decided im waiting for the ‘Speed’ variant.
The deep wheels look a lot nicer on the aeroad IMO

I’m around the same weight as you and only winds above 20mph start to really sketch me out on downhills on my aeroad. Never much worry on the flats.

That bike should be suitable for a while for you, an upgrade to a TT bike wouldn’t be immensely beneficial at that point.

I had the Speed version and installed ERC1100 45 wheels, since I still had them from my old bike. I live in a very windy area, and the difference was quite noticeable—my weight is about the same as yours. On calm days and at higher speeds, I preferred the 62s, although the added weight is a bit of a downside. Availability for the Speed version has been really poor over the past month, so I ended up switching my order to the standard one. If you’ve got the time and are planning to do triathlons anyway, I’d recommend waiting for the 62s.

  4. Pick the wheels that you can later reuse in a TT bike if you are ever going to buy a TT bike.

Spending time in the aero position on the tri extensions improves how you handle crosswinds with deep wheels.
