Hey guy.

My crank fell off during a ride yesterday and I can’t tell if some of the serration is stripped or it is supposed to be like that.

I measured both the spindle and the “remaining” of the serration on the crank and they both measured ~10mm.

I’m going on a big bike trip this weekend so I’m hoping to have this sorted quick.

Also I have lost the crank end cap/bolt. Is that necessary?

Thanks in advance!

  1. The fact that you lost the end cap bolt is probably why it ended up this way, this isn’t something that happened overnight but a gradual work in progress. Your crank is cooked, the endcap is actually the preload tensioner for the crank arm to prevent play/movement.

You need a new crank arm.

  2. If you ride with the crank loose for too long you do this, the splines get chewed up and the cranks arm is scrap. Next time make sure you’re adjusting the preload correctly with that plastic centre nut, then torquing the pinch bolts down by alternating back and forth between the two bolts until you hit the required torque.

Thanks guys. Ordered a new SLX crankset.

How do I switch over the chainring ?

The non-drive side crank arm is cooked. Can’t tell from the photos about the drive side and spindle. Shimano sells non-drive side crank arms or replace the whole crank. There’s a model number on the inside face of the crank arm.
