My school doesn't have much parking for bikes. I petal sit on this rail they have and it works pretty good for standing up my bike. But where I live there is a lot of wind, almost every day. And I don't like leaving my bike outside while I'm in school for 9 hours. Any ideas on what I could do? I was thinking about a cover or something.

  1. as long as you properly maintain your bike, mostly clean the chain and lubricate it, your bike will survive being outside.

also, don’t forget to remove the bag.

also, also, I tend to use the u-lock on the rear wheel. (but that’s just me)

  2. cover is probably counterproductive since that’d provide a bigger surface for wind to catch onto

Would leaning against the fence thats behind the rail be an option?

  3. Looks like you could u-lock around the seat tube and rear wheel to the rail it’s leaning against now and that should keep it upright

  4. Recommendations:

Use your lock on your rear wheel and frame, and use the secondary cable to go through your front wheel.

If you’re in school for hours at a time and you are okay with the time it takes, strapping a tarp down over your bike, or rain fly, could be helpful in particularly rainy environments. Rain flies have the bonus that they often have a stretchy cable or hooks at each corner that could be adapted to surround the bike– it might be nice in rainy weather to be able to keep the rain off of your handlebars as well as your saddle.

Barring that, many people will put a disposable plastic bag, usually reused from the store, and surround their bike saddle with it.

If I have to leave my bike outside for any length of time, I actually use the quick release and remove my saddle, and take it with me– part of that is because I have a leather saddle, and part of it is because I think a bike is less likely to be stolen if it cannot be ridden away as easily.

Leaving your frame bag attached to your bike while it’s locked up for long periods sounds like a recipe for someone to steal the frame bag.

And I concur with the other advice that as long as you keep your chain lubed, do regular maintenance otherwise, you probably don’t need to worry too much about covering the bike entirely.

I think if you are riding it every day and doing normal maintenance, the weather wont he that hard on your bike as normal wear from riding will be the dominant factor. Its when people leave a bike outside for like 3 years without doing anything to it that the elements take a toll.

Get a better lock. Someone is stealing that

I’d probably put some covers on the saddle and handle bars but not much more than that.

  7. Get a buzzer that goes off when touched. Need a way better lock at least one heavy chain lock. Lock where there is foot traffic and camera if possible. Also make it stand out more. The lock you have on can be broken with cutters in less than a minute.

  8. If you put a cover on it, it’ll be more likely to catch the wind and be blown over. Just bare that in mind.

Put a request in to get proper covered bicycle parking installed.

    It’s worth a try!

  10. As an aside: do you like having a rear rack? I’m trying to decide between front or rear rack for my commuter bike. Thanks!

I can’t communicate effectively with someone that has a water bottle holder mounted on their front fork.

  12. Replace screws with hexbolts. Seatylock has something for the tires to prevent theft. Register the bike with the local police. Register the bike with an online anti-theft group. Ditch any cable locks and get something beefy. I use a skunklock. Put stickers on the bike to make it a pain to steal and list online.

Get a real lock. I’d use that cable lock to attach the front wheel to the frame at most. A u lock through the frame and rear wheel going to something, possibly also with the chain extension through the frame again and front wheel.

Get a or better lock(s) please, this one can be cut in Seconds and decoded in minutes.
