Hey all,
I am contemplating my options with this frame, its an old gt talera from 91 I "saved" from garbage.

I had a fight removing the bottom bracket and unfortunately damaged the frame in the process.
Now I am wondering..
a) can I just put a BB in or what would be the consequences?
b) would it make sense to resurface the bb shell?
c) or is it completely toast?

Thanks for your recommendations!

Try threading a BB in and see where it gets you
Could re face the shell if you can get a BB in, but there’s no point refacing if you can’t get a BB in.

  2. In my opinion I think you’re fine to press a new BB in. Next time, you need to use a slide hammer to remove the bearings, as it will not damage the frame as you have here. Use it as a learning lesson and send it

Check if the the threads are ok, you should be able to screw a new bb by hand freely. I wouldn’t worry so much about the surface. If the threads are mangled, you can use a threadless repair bb.

  4. Also depends what kind of BB you want to install. Refacing would matter a lot less if you’re dropping in a square taper.

  5. Assuming the shell isn’t cross-threaded, reface. If facing smooth removes so much material that the BB won’t seat completely, add a shim.

A good shop will have a tool to reface that no problem, if it threads in and stays tight you may get away with it but the crevices will get packed with dirt eventually and possibly make future removal headache

It depends on the BB. If you want to install an external BB, you should get your LBS to face the BB shell. If you’re planning on fitting a square taper/similar BB, you shouldn’t need to do anything.

  8. If the bb threads in you can move forward , or you can spot face and clean up the damage and continue , either way you should be fine

  9. I don’t know about the BB but what happened to the, is that seat stay? It is busted there. Those pipes are thin and you clearly sawed quite a way through it.

Every time I try to answer a question with humor I remember jokes are strictly forbidden here.

  11. Lay a flat file across it to knock down the high spots and be done with it. If the BB threads in ok you’re good to go.

If you fit an obsolete unit-type bottom bracket like a UN55 the alignment of the frame and threads doesn’t particularly matter. Almost all currently available bottom brackets are sensitive to misalignment so if you plan on racking up thousands of miles then get the BB shell faced.

  13. It’ll be fine.

Stick a decent quality square taper bb in there, having greased the threads, and get on with the rest of the build.

It ain’t gonna ride itself! 😘
