I’ve been looking to get my first road bike and have only really rode mountain bikes that my dad bought from thrift stores. I’ve been really wanting to buy my first road bike for casual riding (up to 30-60 km). I was looking at either a brand new RC120 or this one right here I saw on Fb marketplace. With little research I did, shimano groupsets are highly praised, I don’t wanna buy a low spec bike and end up regretting it as I get deeper into cycling. Any help would be great!

  1. That bike is fine but it is NOT made in the USA and it is NOT with more than like $250.

That was a solid group set back in the day, but that’s a whole lot of money for a very old aluminum bike.

    I personally wouldn’t spend more than $300.

One tip with road cycling. Make sure it fits you. Road bikes are very size specific. Research your size first before deciding. If you’re in between sizes, go with the smaller size

  3. Get a bike with disc brakes you won’t regret it. Don’t know the specs of the Rc120

It’s too little of a bike, in that I would not be buying a first road bike in 2025 that only fits 25c tires. Do yourself a favor and get something that can take 28s at least and 32s really if you want to be comfortable.

It’s a scattante, not worth anything but sketch and frustration. Especially an older cf model since cf has a shelf life.

  6. “Ridden indoors” since 2016 to me says the drivetrain is probably cooked. Never seen a mechanic while it was on the trainer racking up miles means the chain went past replacement time and cooked the cassette with it. Not a bad bike in anyway with a good group set. but if the drivetrain needs replacement on an aluminum bike with outdated tire sizing and rim brakes I would buy this for $250.

That’s NOT a 2015 bike. The groupset is more like 2006. So the seller is being dishonest from the outset. I would never buy anything from a liar.

  8. For $695, I’d say it’s not enough bike for the price…

If you’re looking in that price range used, you can find older name brand monocoque carbon frame bikes w/ an equivalent groupset, such as a Specialized Roubaix (which is a great beginner road bike).

Solid advice in the other comments.

But, as a bonus, I do like the nice touch the seller added ‘thank you for your interest’.

That bike must have been built with older components. Ultegra became 11 speed in 2013.

Don’t pay 700 bucks for that bike.

Shop around for something better, if you can.
I’m in Europe, but I found a 6-7 year-old full carbon bike for 600. It’s still rim brake (can probably fit 30mm tires) but it’s 2×11 and compatible with more modern groups.

  12. That’s basically the price I tried and failed to sell a 2018 hybrid with 2×11 Ultegra and disc brakes last year in Germany. 🙊 Anyway that seems way too expensive for very old Ultegra (10 speed is 2005-2014).

I’d look for a 2×11 or at the Decathlon bikes to get a worse shifting experience but freedom to run wide tires for comfort.

  13. I would rather get the rc120. It can accommodate wider tyres( officially 28mm with mudguards, but really 32mm) and has a more relaxed riding position.

It isn’t a classic as the one you have shown, that one is at least 20 years old. Probably way lighter, and the groupset if in good condition is better, but that is a concern if you can’t inspect with someone knowledgeable.
