Shimano xt, relatively new. Largest 3 rings completely snapped from cassette body. Had been messing around with indexing while riding and cable tension probably too high but this seems extreme for that, or not? Any ideas how this happened?

Looks and sounds like abuse. Take it as a lesson. When you think about experimenting, don’t! Take it to a professional. Good luck, have fun.
Submit a warranty claim if less than 2 years old
Is your chain length correct?
Obviously it was the legs…. And traction.
Practically, I don’t think it could be anything but a bad part
