I just bought this trek verve 2 a couple days ago and I really like it. It's a quality beginner bike for me before I dive in deeper to the bike world. For context, i plan to ride on a mixture of paved trails and some dirt/ gravel with some high and Low hills ( no hill bombing 😂😂 ) –
But I'm looking for some help. If someone can explain to me like a toddler, how do l effectively change gears when riding? ( as in when). It's a "24" speed according the internet. (see photos attached) . I am having trouble with the big set of gears in the front (3 speed ). It seem like no water what I cannot shift into 3rd gear. So for now I'm keeping it in 2nd gear that's for " all around". On the right, there is the 8 speed wheel .
Again, if I can get a simple explanation for how to change the gears with out damaging any components that would be great. (lam aware that I should be pedaling when shifting )
TIA

FYI, that isnt a mountain bike. Yes you could absolutely take it on some gravel type trails but it is by definition not a mountain bike, so i wouldnt hit any jumps or anything like that on this. Its what’s called a “Hybrid bike.”
Keep the left gear on 2
Right gear , lower the number (10,9,8…1); use the thumb to shift on the lever closest to your body) if you need to pedal slower (up a hill or slowly accelerating)
Higher number (1,2,3.. 10; use your index finger to press the lever furthest from your body, inward ).. higher number, faster you’ll be (downhill.. straightaways…)
Key is to find the right gear (no correct number as it depends on terrain and muscle ), where you have a teeny bit resistance as you’re pedaling
Once you figure out the shifting , play Witt the one on the left. But when I had one on the left(or front gears), I always left it at 2
