Hello everybody!

I just got my new Canyon Grizl CF SL8 1by with a Shimano GRX RX822 12s rear derailleur.

When pedaling backwards I noticed that chain makes a clicking noise and skips, especially when on the middle and lower gears. The derailleur has been adjusted by a bike mechanic and he says that this noise might be caused by the cassette.

Has any of you encountered something similar? Any tips? Thank you!

  1. Don’t pedal it backwards then? There are ramps on the teeth and chain that only work properly when pedaling forwards.

  2. Wait, that’s quite literally the exact issue my dad has with his new bike.

Chain skips at what seems like the same link on the smaller gears.

I thought it was a matter of adjusting the derailleur, since the same drivetrain on my bike doesn’t have that issue and I did adjust them.

Had this on a previous bike, went back to Canyon and to my LBS but nobody could figure out what caused it – ramps on the teeth sounds about right though. I gave up in the end after realising it really doesn’t matter as it didn’t do it when pedalling forward.

Check the jockey wheels. I think mine was doing that and it was that the chain was dismounting from the pulley and running on the bracket of the pulley. (And maybe was hanging off the pulley for a bit once I pedaled forward – I forget). In fact, I don’t remember if I adjusted anything or just stopped thinking about it. But nothing is broken yet

Have you checked if the screws of your back derailleur are properly tightened?

I think all modern Shimanos do that pedaling backwards, or rather, you can sometimes luck out, but generally, 1x deore does that as well, part of it is the weird angles on the pulleys of those models that work with the ramps

Pedal forward. If it still makes the sound, turn your barrel adjuster 1/4 turn clockwise, shift down and back up again. Repeat until noise is gone.

  8. I developed this on my Canyon Endurace recently, tried to work out everything, and then just gave up, as it doesn’t actually impact the ride in any way.

Mine had the same problem, my LBS said the cassette was not properly tightened, after that, zero skips and noise.
