The Spandau Forest stretches along the border between Berlin and the towns of Falkensee and Schönwalde-Glien. The forest area, which is part of the Berlin Urstromtal valley , originally belonged to the independent city of Spandau and was known there as the Stadtheide (town heath ). For centuries, it was used by Spandau citizens for agricultural purposes, hunting, and firewood harvesting. Although a forester (also called a “heath servant” or “head forester”) is said to have overseen the use of the forest since the Middle Ages , agricultural use in particular had a negative impact on the natural cycle. Furthermore, drainage measures were initiated in the 18th century to create additional usable land. For example, the Nieder Neuendorf Canal was diverted through the forest in the 1730s.
