This is my Paino which I've owned since 2008. I had the frame resprayed by Peter Fleming who originally painted the frame in the 80's and up until now the bike has stayed as is with full Campagnolo Nuovo Gran Sport groupset.

I recently decided to modernise the bike. Was a tough decision to make, but I figure so long as I don't do anything I can't undo I can always revert back to it's original form. I found a Dura Ace 7700 groupset on FB Marketplace (indexed thumb shifters!!!) and pounced on it, and since then I've had a lot of fun sourcing parts for the build, which like all builds, is never finished!

I miss the non-aero levers and I especially miss the quill stem. Right now I'm using a quill to threadless adaptor which feels too much like a hack job, so I've ordered a threadless carbon fork as well as a slimmer looking stem.

My aim is to get the bike to under 6.8kg's. Right now it's sitting at 7.4kg's (as pictured).

Sick build! I agree with the stem, it doesn’t look right on there. Darimo makes super light and minimal looking stems (89g for 110mm) they’re quite expensive but also come in a chrome finish which might look great on there.

I once saw a bike with an extra long headset spacer covering the adapter between the stem and the threaded headset. Very tidy. If you get a particularly short adapter, I imagine the spacer need only be 10mm.

  3. Good on ya for keeping original Frank Piano decals. I think his shop was in Randwick, and was sold about a year ago.

One of the best looking Neo-Retro’s I’ve seen here! This is **super** clean, the spec list is choice, and the weight is impressive!

A small part of me agrees that the chunky stem looks a *little bit* out of place, but I’d be willing to bet the carbon fork woulld help it blend in a bit.

On a related note, have you considered the Inni Headset? Might take a hit on the weight – (240g uncut) – but you get to keep the *sweet* vintage fork. That said, if you do make the switch, I’m curious which forks you have in mind?

Stoked on this build! I’m toying with the idea of doing this level of rework on my dad’s ’87 Bianchi!
