Hi, I have a 2×8 drive terrain but shifting between 1st and 2nd causes problems almost every time and I barely use 1st gear anyway. The main reason I want to take it off (the one the chain isn't on in the pic) is because I often derail. I will upgrade to a 1×12 in the future sometime but until then I was wondering if this is a solution? Thanks.

Yeah, fuggedaboutit, just ditch the front derailleur and shorten the chain a bit. Plenty of YouTube tutorials on making a DIY chain guide to stop the derailing until you finally upgrade.
You need to adjust the front derailleur. There is no reason for the chain to come off like that. The derailleur is likely aligned to close to the frame. All mountain bikes used to be like this.
Yes but it would be best to change to a narrow wide chainring to prevent the chain from falling off.
Super easy to convert to a 1x drivetrain. Tutorials everywhere.
Drive terrain lol
Op take a look at the “low screw limit” on the front derailuer…. If the chain comes off the small front chain ring it’s likely the front derailuer pushing it off.
I’m a 1x on my MTB but still run a 2x on my fat bike and gravel bike.
I kept dropping my chain when the chain was on the larger chain ring in the front. It sort of worked okay but would drop occasionally. It ended up being a slightly bent tooth on the front ring. 30 sec repair to tweak it back.
Those are the two reasons I’ve had drops with a 2x setup. You can convert to a 1x but without a clutched derailuer and a narrow/wide chain ring you’ll probably be driving yourself bonkers with even more drops. I would go full in on a conversion if you go the 1x route vs just taking the front derailuer off and the small chain ring.
