Hey, I've been having a strange feeling lately when it comes to the brakes. They are spongy and not returning to the initial position, which just feels wrong. Stick for reference position. Grx400. The rear brake is better though not perfect, front has worse feeling. Bike was stored inside for the winter. My gf bike was outside and feels like it should be – springy and responsive.
What could it be/what should I check in the first place? The break pads are 80-90% so that's not the issue. Might be dirt (where)? Some spring missing/broken? Or fluid issue?
Thanks!

My first guess would be: brakes need bleeding. Theres air inside the brake-system
Its a fairly simple process with the right tools. There are plenty of how-to video’s on YT. Buy a kit and mineral oil and flush the system. While you’re at it id do the rear side also! GL!
Leave them pressed over night with a rubber band. It should bleed them a little bit.
A brake bleed usually sorts this sort of thing out nicely. The rubber band method as previously mentioned can help, but in my experience it’s not always a permanent solution.
Common issue with this STI.
I brought mine to a mechanic last week for exactly this issue.
He solved it by:
1. Bleeding the brake fluid.
2. Cleaning and lubricating the mechanism.
