  1. IME carbon seatposts can provide a bit of give. But they also cost a LOT. And tires make more of a difference.

I don’t think the cost is worth it. Maaaaaaaaybe if you’ve got some money to burn and are trying to really save weight, but otherwise, naw. (Presuming you don’t have a garbage / super-heavy seatpost of some sort currently.)

  2. If you want a softer ride, first thing to look at is the tires. Go wider, and if you can’t anymore, go softer. Should also cost less than a seatpost (you can get Conti Ultra Sports if youre on a budget)

Will not give as you expect comfort wise but it will shed a good deal of weight

  4. There’s really two categories of carbon seatposts, so you need to watch which one you’re getting at. There’s the weight weenie race ones, which are quite stiff, and then there’s ones that are designed to flex. My touring bike had a Thompson Masterpiece seatpost for a while, and I really hated it. I swapped it out for a flexier S-works one, and the difference was huge. It’s the only carbon component on a rigid steel bike.

At first I thought you kept a spare crow under your seat. You know, just in case.
