We started in the capitol Ljubljana and rode for 8 days through Skofja Loka, Bled, Kranska Gora, Bovec, Tolmin, Brda, Sezana and ending in Piran. Extra days were planned in Bled and Bovec to enjoy the great hiking and riding. We encountered beautiful scenery, crisp fall weather (aside from 3 days of heavy rain) and friendly people who largely spoke excellent English. Nights were spent in rental apartments which were very clean and comfortable. The food was quite good, especially the pastries! I brought my Bike Friday, while Sara and Tim rented bikes in Ljubljana.
The route was a mix of quiet country roads and bike trails. Though there is a fair amount of traffic, everyone drives small cars and leave plenty of space.
We finished the trip with 3 days in Venice where we traded the bikes in for walking shoes. The tourist hordes were impressive despite the season but there can be no denying that Venice remains an architectural and cultural
gem worthy of exploration.
