Would this bike be overkill for my wife who’s a beginner? Mostly going to be riding sidewalk trails or some light gravel. Ideally I’d find a hybrid but this seems like a decent option.

This is fine pretty much a hybrid just bigger tires you can always get a thinner tire when these wear out or start flatting too often just make sure the frame fits her

No that’s a fabulous beginner bike. As long as it fits her and she likes it, it’ll be great. People ride hardtails like that around in my city all the time.
