  1. Have there been any reviews or reports in the past about these handles being a weak point?

I got the same panniers and didn’t have any issues with them in over one year of bike touring. But I took care to never carry them on those strings and at some point everything got so sandy in those clamps that the string was indeed to weak to open them, but I would just push on the plastic to open them

  3. I have had the same ones for about two years – had no issues. I havent used them to carry the bag around except when its empty.

You can have cordage in that diameter that will support 500lb. Unless your panniers are filled with lead I think you’ll be fine.

I‘ve had the same ones for 2 years and I always carry them by the strings, even when packed. Never had issues, but haven‘t used them recently.

  6. I don’t think it is intended to carry the load but to only unlatch the locking grips on your rack. The provided straps and D rings are for carrying.

  7. You could just replace the current cordage with paracord. That’s commonly rated at 500+ lbs.
