Borrowed a bike and clip in shoes from a buddy, he used both for his 140 Ironman. But no matter what I try I cannot get these shoes to clip in. You can kind slide them in from front to back but that’s obviously not fully clicked in. Did my buddy really go 300+ miles with the wrong shoes / clips or am I a complete idiot?

You need new cleats
I may be wrong, but it looks like you’re trying to use old Look Delta cleats on a (probably) newer Keo or SPD-SL system.
It should connect!
Slide in back to front and then step down hard with your foot in the shoe. To unclip, rotate your heel away from the bike.
Those r peloton cleats you need yellow or blue shimano cleats
Go flat pedals. You’ll love it, it’s a way of life…
I swear by Zeray cleats from Amazon. They’re cheap and work great. Sounds crazy but I feel they lock in better than actual Look cleats which are three times the price.
I have these pedals. They use Look Keo cleats. The one you have on your shoes are delta cleats
300+ miles in the wrong cleats sounds about right for a triathlete.
Like everyone else said. I think you got the wrong cleats. Why don’t you take your bike in to LBS and ask them what cleats you’ll need for this pedal. I’m almost certain your LBS will have cleats that you need for sale.
