Hi everyone,

I need to replace my rear wheel because it’s cracked (sigh), and the freehub has become sticky. I’m still learning about wheels, so I have a few basic questions.

My bike is a 2019 Men's Diverge E5 Comp (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/mens-diverge-e5-comp/p/154247?color=239512-154247), with the following components:

  • Front: 12x100mm thru-axle
  • Rear: 12x142mm thru-axle, threaded bottom bracket, flat-mount disc
  • Drivetrain:
    • Shimano 105 R7000, 11-speed (long cage)
    • Cassette: Shimano 105, 11-speed, 11-34T
  • Brakes: Tektro Spyre mechanical disc, 160mm rotor (6-bolt)

I’ve decided to get the DT Swiss GR 1600 SPLINE rear wheel in a 12x142mm configuration (Shimano/SRAM HG freehub). Since it’s a center-lock hub and my current rotors are 6-bolt, I’ll switch to a Shimano SLX SM-RT70 (160mm) center-lock rotor.

My cassette is fairly new, so I plan to move it over to the new wheel. I’ll need a chain whip and lockring removal tool to swap the cassette. As I understand, the same lockring tool can also tighten the center-lock rotor.

My questions:

  1. Are there any other tools or supplies I should add to my shopping cart?
  2. Do I need some grease for the freehub?

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips!

PS: I found out that the DT Swiss GR 1600 is sold out on many resellers, do you know why? Maybe they are cleaning the inventory for a new model?

  1. I let others answer 1, for 2 you can get like a DT swiss kit if you want that let’s you dismantle and have the special grease they prefer to be used on DT Swiss hub and freehub, only thing I can add

I used to look at DT swiss 180 hub but now looking at hubs twice that price
