In 2023, Helsinki launched the Esplanade Experiment, a two-year initiative aimed at enhancing the Esplanade Park area by improving pedestrian spaces and greenery, while reducing the space allocated for cars. A central feature of the project was the introduction of the Eteläesplanadi cycleway, which offered dedicated, safe lanes separated from motor and pedestrian traffic. The experiment also repurposed car parking spaces to accommodate bike parking. Due to its short duration, the cycleway was implemented by paving asphalt over the cobblestones instead of using a stone surface more suited to the historic environment, which sparked heated debate among various groups.

The experiment concluded in November 2024, with car lanes and parking areas returned to motor traffic. During the experiment, cyclists rated their experience with an average score of 3.5 out of 5. While the cycleway improved cycling conditions, it did not result in a significant increase in cyclist numbers. Visitors generally supported the initiative, appreciating the enhanced pedestrian and green spaces created by reducing car space. However, concerns were raised about car traffic disruptions, particularly from through drivers, logistics, and rescue services.

The Esplanade Experiment was just the first phase of developing this central area. The results from the experiment will guide the planned revamp of the entire street network around Esplanade Park, with implementation expected in 5 to 10 years due to aging infrastructure.

  1. I loved this experiment! 🙂 It's clear and completely understandable that a single bike lane project would not boost the amount of cycling. That never really happens! However as Helsinki becomes more bicycle friendly all around, and the cycling networks connect and become higher quality, then the numbers will start rising drastically!

Esplanadi is such a valuable and historic space in Helsinki that it deserves proper traffic calming! It should not be a space where loud motor traffic builds up. It has the potential for so much more than it can currently offer. ❤️ I'm waiting eagerly for what the city can come up with!
