I just had the worst experience ever buying online.

I wanted a gravel bike with GRX components and I filtered the search with this option. Found a cool bike, negotiated with the seller and bought it.

Fast forward few hours and I found out that actually the bike doesn’t have GRX but it has SRAM instead and only 1x upfront. Not what I’m looking for.

Tried cancelling and now they want 75€ from me, the buyer, to do so. GRX is advertised not only in the Title, but multiple times in Description (which is completely wrong).

Seller already apologized, but what now? I don’t know, I tried contesting but they won’t answer.

  1. Mmmh, I am not sure if Buycycle is at fault here: they really have no control on what a seller says and they may charge some fees for canceling a sale. I would say that this fee should be charged on the seller, which is the one that falsely advertised a product. Try to tell them this.

  2. You had photos of the bike, managed to mistake the groupset and thinks this is the site’s fault?

  3. I don’t get BuyCycle and this story reinforces it. It seems they’re charging for an otherwise free online classified and the only tangible benefit would be buyer protection. In this case, they screwed the buyer. Please enlighten me if I’m missing something.

Did the description actually say this bike had 2x GRX or did they just put a bunch of terms like GRX at the end of the description in order to get more views from related search results? If the actual description was wrong then you have something to be mad about, but if they just included other terms then it’s on you for not reading or looking carefully.

  5. Sounds like your fault. Didn’t fully inspect or research the listing before pulling the trigger. This is why when I list I’m extra transparent on what’s on the bike, condition, and detailed photos. If you miss interpret or don’t look at the photos, not on me. That’s your problem dawg.

I listed a bike on there last year and I was lucky enough to meet in person and exchange cash. I did not process the sale through Buycycle, fortunately. Thanks for sharing this information, 75 seems like a lot for you to cancel the sale. I don’t think the fee is warranted at all.

  7. What matters is if GRX was in the description. If it was and you bought that SKU it is bait and switch and most likely not legal. Check your local consumer protection laws. Send an email saying you want them to fix it.
