A quick question for those that have used a bike box to fly their bike to the start of a trip… Where do you keep your box whilst your touring?? Do you pay for storage somewhere? Mine is a hard case like the one pictured, so not very discrete.
Planning on going to Quebec in a month or so (flying from Vancouver) and trying to decide if it's possible/worth it to fly my bike or rent one there. I have a bike box already from when I moved country…

I keep it in hotel storage.
Airport storage is an option but gets crazy expensive. A solid option is to find a month to month storage facility near the airport. You could also put out a Craigslist/facebook/reddit ad about storing it for 100 bucks. I had a dude store my bike box for 100 bucks in Europe once.
Most tourers use cardboard boxes that they abandon at the airport or wherever. Some (like me) just use a soft bag that they can take with them on the tour.
book the same hotel for first and last night and ask them nicely to store it
If you are staying at the same hotel for a night at the beginning and end of the trip you can probably keep it at the hotel. Just ask them.
You can also try using warm showers and see if someone has the space to store it for you. As a host, I have kept a bike box in my basement for a while while they were on tour.
I stored my soft sided bike case at the hostel in montreal. Maybe 5$/day? Storage at the airport would have been too much.
