My friends keep riding their bikes through the winter months and here they are explaining about their piggdekk (tyres with small metal spikes) that help them keep safe in the snow and ice. They are neighbours and have to ride several kilometres home from the city centre with the last part up a very steep incline to their street. According to Turid, one of the most active Norwegians I know, Per is the oldest person in our city to ride a bike during the winter. He is in his 70’s and has recently had a knee replacement.

When you see people who demonstrate a high level of physical or mental fortitude it can be motivating or possibly even shaming. I felt extremely lazy sitting in my warm 4WD driving by them on their bikes, making their way in this weather. They both amaze and inspire me.

In general Norwegians are a very resilient bunch and in general they are outdoors every day jogging, hiking, walking their dogs, skiing, skating, sledding and biking. I wish I had their physical and mental strength, and I aspire to develop my own.

Resilience is a word often thrown around these days, but do you know what is involved in becoming resilient? Resilience gives us the ability to bounce back from tough times. It allows us to approach life’s challenges head-on and emerge stronger and wiser. It’s about adaptability and growth. When something unexpected happens, being resilient means acknowledging the difficulties, adjusting your approach, learning from experiences, and finding healthy ways to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose.

Today’s ecotherapy tip is to upgrade your resilience through continuing your normal exercise regimen on days when the weather seems discouraging. This applies mainly to outdoor exercise but the concept extends to other adversity such as periods of illness and injury.

Resilient people look for solutions, lean on their support systems, and stay hopeful even in moments of stress. Anyone can develop resilience over time, with every challenge bringing an opportunity to grow.

Resilience shows up in the courage to try again after a failure, the strength to seek help when things get overwhelming, and the tenacity to keep pursuing your goals despite the obstacles you face. A resilient mindset is an empowering strategy for life’s ups and downs which can be adopted by everyone.
