I'm looking at buying my first mountain bike with the intention of doing mostly light trail rides but also some easy beginner downhill trails.
For reference I live in Vancouver! I'm stuck between these 2 bikes. 1 being hard tail and the other is full suspension.

Option two shouldn’t even be an option.
The Kona and not really even close. That age difference is significant.
100% the Kona hardtail. Looks more modern geo, and not needing to service all the rear pivots and shock. Hardtail should always be your first bike and is the easiest to learn proper techniques and easiest to service

For a brand new bike decathlon has a decent hardtail xc.bike for under 1000.

I’ve been riding mine for like 12+ years, and I’ve only had to replace one shifter, and just serviced everything else.
Get the Kona. Put a Cane Creek Seatpost Shock and you’re good to go. Too bad Kona is gone. Great bunch of Alcoholics.

Definitely the Kona. Their service is awesome and honestly, hard tails are just more fun.
While everyone says that #1 is the better option (it is), you should keep looking. The fact that #2 was even a consideration tells me that you might need some help lol.
The used market in BC is crazy rn. You should at least get a dropper post and tires that are more suitable for Vancouver riding
Hardtail gang! I may be biased because I’m a dinosaur, but I think everyone should at least start out on a hardtail.
