Looks as if it overshifted the big sprocket and grabbed a spoke. Count yourself lucky if the frame hanger is not bent.

Huh. So that’s how long it takes for metal fatigue to set in on these old thangs.

It almost looks like there is some prior cracking if you look at the bottom inner edge of the derailleur side break in the second picture. Maybe it was just waiting for something like this to happen to totally let go.
Sucks though, these are such beautiful derailleurs. I wonder if you can still buy replacement knuckles?

The good news is the frame is not damaged!

Holy crap, this happened to me yesterday! Not exactly sure how it happened, but something got jammed up for a fraction of a second while climbing hard and the derailleur got pulled into the spokes and literally ripped apart! Bad times… Mine was a Campagnolo Chorus 12spd mech 😞

That’ll be hard to replace without access to a time machine.
Wheels and componants don’t last forever.. so

You have my condolences.

Yeah that sucks. Old stuff breaks.
But I’ve never had a suntour or shimano dangler break like that. And I use some really old danglers
Lol, literally the same happened to me last week
