  1. It’s all backwards and upside down. The part that is outside the chainstay is the lower (upper since your bike is upside down) leg of the chain that runs between the derailleur and the chain rings. A fuller picture could help but usually it’s a few minutes of staring at it to figure out what goes where.

    unless you broke and reconnected the chain incorrectly then it HAS to work. Keep messing around with it. You might have to swear at it a bit, but you’ll figure it out.

    The chain is now, for lack of a better description, “upside-down.”

    Disengage the chain from cogs/gears/pulleys.

    The chain is a plane. From the rear of the bike, the plane of the chain must rotate 180 degrees clockwise.
