Paddy ringing the bicycle bell really is the clincher
Civilized men cannot sense the danger of an uncivilized man. He has broken no laws, a senior officer, and he's on your side. The bobby just couldn't read the room and left Paddy on his merry way, but tick off Paddy and he'll do things just to spite you, like take your bike.

This season was not good. The dialogue is so heavy handed and on the nose. Absolutely no subtly at all.
