I know 622 is equivalent to 700c – but I always thought the width part stayed the same? Is 42-622 not the same as 42×700?

Yes, 42-622 is stated on the package and is for 700c tires
It’s not that critical. 40 or 42 width are practically the same. Just make sure you need schrader and not presta valve.
I think my first question would be are your rims drilled for Schrader Valves or Presta? If it’s Presta.. not going to fit.
If your rims are drilled for Schrader then think about the the tire width… I think the largest tire width for that tube is 40… it might work( honestly probably will ) but might not last very long because the tube will be stretched so thin.

When written as 700x40c, it means the rim has a nominal diameter of 700c (aka 622mm) and the tire width is 40mm, however that tube is labeled for 35-40mm. When written as 42 – 622, that means the tire’s height is 42mm.
tl;dr: 700c tube will fit 35-40mm best. You can usually go smaller by a tiny bit, or larger by a modest amount. I’d say it’s fine in 30-50, though if your tire is <35 or >40 then just buy a better size tube to start with.
Also note that this is a Schrader tube, which is rather rare for a 700c. You probably need a Presta valve tube which has a smaller diameter hole in the rim. A Schrader valve won’t fit in a Presta rim without some drilling.
Tubes will work in tires slightly larger or smaller than spec just fine. It will be marginally faster! And marginally less puncture resistance.
yes, no problem. when in doubt, ERTRO is more accurate (the one with 622). Tubes are always a little stretchy, you could probably fit those into 700x50c and be fine. it’s normal to be confused, it IS confusing
Tubes are now coming in sizes that can fit more than one tire height. From what e see. Lately, they can fit one size up and one size down.
