I was changing my stem today on my mtb and part of my headset came off and so did this piece. Not really too sure what this piece does. Was wondering if someone could tell me 😅 tried googling couldnt specifically identify it. It was some part under my stem? It looks like maybe a compression ring from what i researched but still wouldn’t know where to put it.

It likely goes on top of your top headset bearing, with the narrow part downwards, it should fit with the inner chamfer of the bearing (which is facing upwards)
it goes on the top headset bearing around your steer tube to reduce the play of the steer tube.. Other wise you will feel the slack in your bars
It’s the top bearing race. It goes over the top bearing with the narrow side down.
Frodo always leaving that thing lying around. You should try it on. What’s the harm?
Looks like the wedge for headset
Throw it out you don’t need it 😉
You know what’s better than the peace of mind of doing that repair yourself?
Taking it to a bike mechanic and having them give you the satisfaction of knowing it’s done right.
