I have recently decided that I’ve wanted to start getting into mountain biking, and from preliminary research have seen buying used is the way to go for beginners on a budget.
Initially I wanted to limit my price to $600, but I found this bike on Facebook marketplace and it seems like a great deal at first glance.
I don’t know the first thing about mountain bikes outside of knowing I want a hard tail, so I wanted to get some input on whether or not this is a purchase I should pursue.

Depends on what type of riding you plan to do? This is a xc bike which will be great for easy trails and climbing
I don’t know what your intended trails are but I wouldn’t take this on anything to aggressive. You could make that a nice gravel bike! Definitely light trail. $900 seems a bit steep for an older bike.
found one near me about a year ago for 300 and I was crushed when I found it was an XL frame.🤕.
Superfly will always be the one that got away for me. kind of like Marisa Tomei, or Winona Ryder.
for 900 you could get a brand new hard tail that is better than that. I wouldn’t do it.
Are you racing XC?
Otherwise there’s a ton of better bikes.
You can get a brand new roscoe 7 for $1100 right now and i think the marlin 7s are around $500. Lots of steep discounts from all manufacturers right now, id shop around new at that budget.
Hella expensive for what you’re getting, I think it’s expensive because it’s “rare”, not because it’s particularly good, you should be able to get a similar if a bit heavier and not as prestigious hardtail used for like 300
I would love this bike, and would buy it personally. But I’ve got 14 years of riding experience and so I know exactly what I’m getting with this bike, and what it can ride comfortably.
For me, it’s a great cross country bike, that I can also smash red trails on. Personally, I would say this is a great “learner” bike, that’s actually got a good albeit old spec.
Everyone saying you can get much better for the money aren’t lying in the sense you can get a newer / new entry level bike. But they will not be “better” all the components will be if a much lower spec. Whereas this frankly, when taking into account the nice carbon frame is an amazing bike.
Get it for as little as possible. Then compare it to a new entry level bike you could buy for the same cash.
That era frames had cracking issues. I’m not sure which year exactly, but I remember my racing buddies breaking them.
Very outdated bike. Don’t buy unless you know what you are getting yourself into. If you decide mountain biking is your thing and you want to upgrade or you demo more modern bikes you will find that you will be very limited on what you can do to this bike to make it more modern and you’ll be out ~ $900.
OP, be honest, you’re the seller trying to find out if 900 $ for that old bike can fly, right? 😀 I can’t imagine anyone seriously selling it for that much, far less a buyer considering it…
I think it’s awsome. Offer 7..he’ll say 8 and settle on 750. Xt components will out live you.
As a guy who still rides an old bike, I can tell you the new ones are much more fun to ride. The new geo solves most of my complaints.
But do whatever gets you out on the trails
In this market, especially the used one, you can get a lot of bike for $900. While this bike may be in excellent shape, I would look for something more modern for beginners. You can probably find something like a Giant Fathom in the price range. Good spec, modern geo, etc.
Looks to be in great shape but is severely out of date, I wouldn’t pay more than $300
I had this same year Superfly and loved it! However Carbon frames and my Clydesdale weight class don’t go together. That all being said you can get a lot more bike with updated components for that price
Just get a new roscoe 7 or something, it’ll be way better
Stay away, the frame and components are super outdated. Take some time and keep looking. Try to stay in the range of 2018+
If you have $900, you can a much better, more up-to-date hard tail, new, probably on sale.
Ask 600. I’ve got pretty much the same bike. I’ve put thousands of miles on it. It’s a great bike.
