It’s a cover on the shifter where the shift cable goes in. You screw it in from the outside

Man I just had to buy one of these cause I lost mine. Definitely install it, otherwise dirt is going to get into the shifter.

Looks like you disassembled the shifter when you could have just undone this one tiny screw to thread the cable through

You did not need to remove the bottom cover to replace the cable. You unthread the plastic screw to install the cable, the shifter has to be clicked all the way to the highest gear (for the rear shifter)
