  1. Glad you made it out okay—that crash sounds brutal. But saying “all cyclists should wear helmets” based on your experience ignores the huge difference between sports cycling and utility cycling. Someone commuting at 10 mph on a Dutch bike isn’t taking the same risks as someone bombing down a descent or riding in a paceline. Utility cyclists ride in a way that makes crashes far less likely in the first place. Helmets are a personal choice, but lumping all cyclists together as if they’re facing the same dangers just doesn’t add up.

    I’ve had two bike crashes in the last 15 years. On both occasions, I hit my head on the pavement very hard. My helmet almost certainly saved me from a catastrophic head injury, if not death.

  3. and then I see people riding on the multi-use path/trail, with no helmet and radio cranked up. This is not how you make your life better, it’s how something really bad can happen.
