Is their bike even locked to the rack? It doesn’t look like the U-lock is around anything, and I don’t see another lock. I would just move it.

Because they’re a jackass. Whenever this happens at my work I usually leave a note in their helmet asking them (nicely) not to block so many racks, which usually does the trick.

Usually an umbrella will fit in just one spot.

Guessing they don’t want their bike getting scratched lifting it up onto the rack or other people banging against it while they lift theirs up or down.
And I have to admit that to an extent I sympathize because I’ve never used a vertical hanging rack and this looks really dodgy to me, but then again I’d probably just use a bike with less emotional value or find a different way to park my bike.

I think there’s a good chance they have issues with the rack set-up — it’s probably a combination of the factors listed below:
* They’ve never used this type of rack and don’t know how it works (yes, they can see other bikes, but they’re still intimidated)
* They lack upper body strength and coordination to lift their bike, similarly, they might be short, this does look like a smallish frame
* They got to the office firs,t and no other bikes were parked,d so they thought this would be fine
* They just got there and had to run to the bathroom for an emergency shit
Options:
– just put the bike up, not a huge deal, probs what I would do.
– leave a note
– just move on with your life

Maybe their should is busted and they can’t lift it. Maybe they’re a selfish asshole. Who knows?

Maybe they aren’t physically capable of lifting it into the rack? Do the racks usually fill up? Why not just move it if it is the way? It looks like it isn’t locked.
I’m really short and had a hard time getting my road bike on the wheel up rack at work. I am more than capable of lifting my bike but it was a really awkward way to lift it for me. Now I ride an ebike so I’m definitely not lifting it but I never block the racks if anyone wants to use them.

Maybe the cyclist has an injury and has great trouble lifting the bike. Just move on and don’t try to be the bike police.

Considering they didn’t lock it at all I wonder if they just ran inside real quick.

It would appear there is no shortage of available slots, so this is not negatively impacting anyone.

Going to be devil’s advocate here, but; I always try to assume there is a reason someone has done this.
The couple of times I have had to do it, is because I have been physically unable to in that moment. I have a lot of problems with hypermobility in my joints, which means some days I feel ok, and other days I am fighting my joints not to sublux or dislocate – often I will even start out a ride feeling fine, and then a vertebrae pops out of joint because I did something silly like try to hold a gate open or turn my head at slightly the wrong angle, and it can totally end me for the day. This has meant I’ve had to limp back home and just leave my bike at the back door until me or my husband can deal with it. It is a surprisingly common condition. I’m not saying this is what has happened here, but it makes me a little more forgiving when people do this. I know for a fact I absolutely would not be able to lift the bike up onto that rack on a good day, let alone on a really bad day.
So maybe instead of getting mad, think about why someone may have *had* to leave the bike there.
Obviously, if it is happening every single day, leave a friendly note asking if they need some help with the rack, as they can be awkward to use. Give them the benefit of the doubt. If it turns out they are just a lazy cunt though, then I would feel mad.
