Baba Marta is a traditional Bulgarian holiday celebrated on March 1st, it celebrates the beginning of a new natural cycle. The mythical figure, Baba Marta, is depicted as an old woman whose moods control the weather, and she appears in many traditional Bulgarian fairy tales.
A key tradition is the Martenitsa, it is a red-and-white twisted thread which symbolizes strength, love, purity, and it is given with good wishes of health and success. The origin of the Martenitsa is linked to multiple legends, including those of Khan Asparuh and Khan Kubrat, which connect to Bulgaria origin. The figures Pijo and Penda, often represented with the Martenitsa, symbolize love, purity and joy.
