I finally found a vintage touring bike that works for me and picked up this pretty darn clean 1986 Voyageur a couple days ago. I already have a few things in the mail and am bringing it in for hub/bearing maintenance since that stuff is above me.

Just gotta decide on what type of rack and bag setup to do for overnight bike-packing. That, and a few other things that will fall into place in time.

Also looking for recommendations for aesthetic but affordable bike bags.

  1. I’ve had a 1985 Schwinn Voyageur since 2018 and have put about 5,000 touring miles on it in a dozen states. Even though I have a modern touring bike, I still take this on trips every year. It’s been a really good bike. Can’t give good suggestions for rack and bags. It came with a rear rack and the front bag and racks were bought from Nashbar returns before they folded.

A few thoughts on the bike:

. I believe the rear wheel has 40 spokes, which is more that most wheels.

. Mine was converted from 27″ to 700c. This caused a bunch of issues with the cantilever brake geometry. It does allow more tire options even though there are acceptable 27″ touring tires.

. With the wheel conversion, it went to an 8 speed cassette. The friction shifter has no trouble with the change.

. Looks like you can accommodate two more bottle cages. Always good to have extra water when touring.

. Mine has had most things replaced other than the frame, fork, stem, handle bars, shifters and seat post.

    . Mine is named Schwinnebago.
