Hey gang,
I’ve recently moved further from work (first time buyer!) and can no longer do my beloved 20 min stroll to work. I’ve been getting the bus, which is fine, but I have always fancied the idea of biking it.
My good friend was buying a new (fancy electric) bike and knew that I was interested so has gifted me his old one! I rode it home (about 25 mins) and it felt good. A little heavy but it all seemed to work well (brakes, gears etc).
I don’t need a lock yet (secure storage both ends, i’ll get one if i want to go all recreational).
My questions are:
1. I know it’s only a picture, but does the bike look alright for a 5.5km commute (11 in total)? Any red flags?
2. Apart from a helmet and some lights, any other recommendations on things I should pick up?
Thanks!

Chain and sprockets look to be a bit rusty. Clean those up and keep them oiled (but dont over oil that road dust gunks it up). Then i would look at the forks and see if it needs a look at.
Being a Carrera thier great bikes for beginners and looked after they run forever. Halfords who sell them should be helpful for any repair but the brand is well liked and pretty universal that most bike repair shops will be very familiar with them.
The only “red flag” I see is a rusty chain honestly. I would try to pick up some chain lube next time you get the chain replaced. Other than that it’s just a game of keeping things clean and scratch free (as much as possible lol)🤙
