First time doing a full serivice on my bike… I have some shimano SLX brakes that I was going to clean and service but when I pumped the lever, one piston moved and all the brake fluid came out. I ran some new fluid through there thinking I could fix with more fluid and it just happened again ha. What do I do next?

The pistons look to be in tact! Hoping I do not need to buy a whole new caliper…

  1. your caliper is toast mate. there are pretty flimsy seals between the piston and cylinder..they are certainly destroyed if your piston leaks now.

There’s a decent chance the pistons are cracked even if they look in tact. I usually see them cracked in the backside. I would put a bleed block in, then once the system is bled, close of all the bleed ports, and clean everything up. Once clean and dry, wrap the bleed block in a paper towel, put it back in the caliper and give the lever a squeeze. The pistons will push against the bleed block and if it’s leaking from a piston, the paper towel getting wet should show which one

  3. Did you squeeze the lever with the pads and rotor out of the caliper?? If so you ejected the piston far enough to leak fluid. Take it to a shop to be reset and bled, or push that piston back in and bleed it yourself. Reassemble with pads, and wheel, and squeeze your brake hard. If it leaks, you’ve broken the seals around the piston. If it doesn’t, go ride
