I’ve been trying to find a new bike recently and my mom told me she still had an older one, sat outside for years so everything is rusted.
And I grew a lot. I’m 5’11 now, I think the tires are 24?.
Should I just buy a brand new bike or is it worth it to just fix this one?
Can I buy bigger tires/wheels to compensate for the heights?
What to fix, if so?

tbh its totally gone, the work on it would be extremely high, like getting a second job is waaaaaaay better than the time invested in this, not being sure anything runs smooth (which is incredible unlikely)… hell I will just stop there and tell you not to do it.
Idk how the used market is in your area, but I got my ex gf a 300€ Hardtail mountain bike.
watch some videos about basic mountainbikes, maybe that helps you.
My tip for used market: look at the market (idk where you live, maybe facebook, ebay) every day, it will take weeks and months but its worth it. Look how air suspensions looks like on the front. Unfortunately you cant see it that well, I looked at mtb videos, saw what they got as Im generally interested. Google how rockshox and fox suspension looks like (also how their brand logo looks) and look out for front air suspension. Changing that is the most expensive part and air suspensions are light and way better at dampening hits, its not worth to change a front suspension on a cheap bike, but having a medium/cheap bike with air suspension is great, you can change brakes (if they are with cable and not hydraulic). So you can cheaply upgrade some things. Look how steel spring suspensions look like. You will notice you often see sr suntour and some no names. Thats how you can also instantly tell its a steel spring bike. Also a air suspension is more efficient while riding, its A LOT of fun and for that (and other reasons) a very good first bike
But if you have sparetime, you could also do a side job and get a 800 bucks mtb that is good, is newish. My previous idea went with a 2013 Mtb. And you also need to pay some 100-150€ to renew the suspension by yourself (which will lead you to save a lot of money in your life if you are really intersted in mtb, and need to service your suspension, which otherwise costs you 300-400€ to do a big service)
If you have a boat you can use this as an anchor. I am as budget minded as it gets with mountain biking. I am all for people getting a department store hardtail to get riding if that is what they can spend. What you have here is a rusted out shell of a bike that wasn’t really for the sport to begin with. No amount of fixing and upgrading could bring it to any rideable condition worth the money and effort.

You can get the ozark trail ridge for under 400 bucks. If you’re looking for a budget build that would be the one. Fixing this bike would suck your money into the deepest darkest black hole you could imagine. Hell for 50 more dollars ozark trail even has a full suspension 29er which I would buy before ever considering fixing that bike. I would find a nice responsible place to properly dispose of this bike and never look back.
Assuming this isn’t a troll or a shitpost the unfortunate truth is that this bike is scrap metal.
It wasn’t a very good one to begin with and you’ll likely never be able to find all the replacement parts you need to make it safe if you can even make it safe at this point.
If you’re serious about getting into the sport you should plan to budget $500-$700 for a bare bones entry level hardtail that is safe and fun and a decent helmet.
