Start at Horrocks Wood car park, just north of Bolton. Follow Scout Road for a few hundred yards to the crossroads, turn right onto Coal Pit Lane. There’re diversions and closures that keep you off the original bridleways around homes, but just keep going. Tarmac road becomes gravel track , but plod on. Over a bridge and a boulder section, stick to the left, not along the footpath. At the junction turn right and a steady climb. Through the gate and onto the tarmac service road for the transmitters. Keep an eye out for the descent route, labelled as a footpath, but plod on towards the trig point. There are little bits beyond if you want a look.
Retrace your route, turning left onto the “footpath” commonly known as San Marino. It is rough and rutted, so be prepared. Eventually you reach the pub itself on the main Belmont Road. There is a cycle lane, but it is a busy road. Look out for the right turn upScout Road that leads back to the car park. Took me about 75 minutes, but that included food breaks.
