I found cheap hoods and chopped them up as an experiment. I thought that for under $15, it wouldn’t be too much of a waste even if I decided I hated them.

The first picture is the final result, followed by the process if anyone wanted to try something similar.

I cut off the lever with a dremel and glued in a tube (just a cut up sharpie) to reach the bolt to mount them. Everything had to be scuffed first to get the glue to stick and to get the Bondo to stick afterwards.

From there, I added filler and sanded it all smooth, with a second layer to fill pinholes and any mistakes from the first pass at sanding. That was followed by primer and was sanded to get any final small pinholes, followed by another layer of primer that was gently scuffed. Then it got a few layers of paint, and was sanded again since I got some orange peel in the finish. I’m choosing not to clear coat, but it would probably be a good choice to if you want them to be durable.

The last picture is what I started with.

My roomie said they look like dongs, and while they’re not wrong, I’m still kind of happy with them.

  2. Pretty sure I modified the same hoods. But in a massive rush, no fancy tools etc.

    Yours look way better. 😅

    Nice job.
