My chain got sucked on my first ride with my new bike and smashed the sucking plate and ripped of some paint. I don’t think that it got deeper into the frame but canyon told me you never know. Gonna get it inspected at their service partner here but until than I need your emotional support to tell me that it’s just the paint and canyon might even come up for the cost of changing the sucking plate. My chain was a kmc 12 speed that got totally twisted and I had to shorten it about 15 Chain links during the ride with the help of a MTB Hero that has just crossed paths with us. What’s might’ve caused the issue? The fact that I have changed to a 11-34 cassette without taking a longer chain? It happened during the end of a climb while changing to a bigger chainring.

Oh no man that really sucks 🥲🥲🥲 fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Did you check if the derailleur was properly aligned and everything?
Depends on how long the chain was and on which cog you were I guess.

  2. 1. Get a chain catcher
    2. Why did you have to remove 15 chain links? Was the chain that much too long?
    3. Yes, changing the cassette without changing the chain length can be a source of trouble

  3. I had a friend of mine experience the exact same thing on the very first ride with his Aeroad. Inspected at a service partner, frame got replaced on warranty after.

  4. That sucks! Consider getting a chain catcher, cheap insurance against a damaged frame from chain drop.

  5. The chain was bented after it got sucked at two spots. That’s why I couldn’t ride on without shortening it that much…

  6. I did the same on my Ultimate CF-SLX9. I could have cried. And I had a chain catcher, but that doesn’t help with chain suck.

I actually think chain suck might be a common problem with Shimano 12s. In over 20 years of cycling I had never experienced it and it has happened twice in the last 12 months. Once with 12s Dura Ace on my Ultimate, and another time with 12s 105 (mech). Both whilst shifting up to the big ring.
