I was riding home from work in the snow when suddenly this started consistently happening. I was still able to get home but when you release the pedals they keep going while the bike is moving and you can’t really move the pedals backward anymore. Thanks for any help.
Please help me identify this

If the wheel can still move but the bike is no longer able to coast, that would indicate your freehub has broken. It’s difficult to tell, but it looks like you may have the older style coasting mechanism called a freewheel. These are extremely cheap, usually only like $20 parts. You will need to have a shop perform this swap for you as it requires specialty tools that normally are almost the price of the freewheels themselves.
your chain and cassette look like they’re both caked in rust. when’s the last time you’ve had any maintenance done on your drivetrain?
“Suddenly this started constantly happening ” sounds like every customer I ever had at the shop. Yes it’s called wear and tear and riding in the snow with salted roads you will have bigger issues unless you clean and maintain your bike
