  1. I could be wrong here but it looks like you’re either spinning the tool in the vice or stripping out the teeth that the tool holds on to… what you’re doing should be correct. Freewheel removal tool inside of the freewheel, spin counter clockwise.

    There are two possible problems I can see – one is using the wrong freewheel remover. There are a handful of different multi-splined removers that look similar but are slightly different and therefore incompatible. IIRC using a Shimano cassette lockring remover to remofe a shimano freewheel is one of these incompatibilities.
    The other possibility is that you have one of the old 2- or 4-prong (Suntour?) freewheel removers, which were notorious for slipping if not perfectly aligned when you try to remove the freewheel.

    All just guesses though because I can’t see the freewheel or the tool.
