  1. How many kilometers or hours did you ride that chain? What lube are you using? What shop did you buy the chain from?

  2. Where do you buy your chains from? Could be fake chains.
Does everything sound and feel clean while shifting before this happens?

I ran GX chains for years in muddy conditions without this ever happening.

  3. Either overstressed the chain or you have an infestation of tiny gnomes with tiny hacksaw that want to ruin your ride day.

    Old chains can do this
Poor quality chains can do this.

  4. The force exceeded the chains limits.
How this came to be is unclear, more information needed, all starting with how strong the chain is to begin with (good/ bad quality/ price).
Chain gets weaker by wear (much increased by dirt and poor shifting).
Force gets reduced by frequent cleaning/ lubrication/ good shifting and increased by lacking lubricant, dirt and poor shifting.

All assuming all other parts are good.

Happened to me on a sram apex chain. Submitted a warranty and got a chain in the mail the next day.

As my mate used to say. ‘Who would be a chain?’ Not enough data to diagnose sorry.

  7. Where do you buy your chains?

GCN just did a really good video (good by any standard, great by GCN) on counterfeit parts including chains. If you buy from Amazon, Ebay, an online store that doesn’t have a storefront or any of the Alibaba type places, chances are it’s a knockoff. If you bought it from your local shop or a reputable shop, bring it back and ask them to warranty it. That shouldn’t happen on a chain that hasn’t been run to death.

  8. Your chain is clearly counterfeit. **ALL** Eagle chains have hollow pins. Yours aren’t – it’s a fake.

Bike shop employee here. We had multiple sram gx 12 speed chains where this occurred. All the chains were from our sram parts supplier or original equipment manufacturer supplied (oem). With a receipt / proof of purchase sram will warranty the chain due to defective materials. The chains were NOT counterfeit. Hopefully just a small batch but I saw this issue starting approximately June 2024.
