The Mapdec team headed down to the Ice Bike Show in Manchester. It is a show run by Madison, one of the biggest distributors in the UK and represent brands like Shimano, Park Tool, DT Swiss, Wheels Mfg, Elite, and loads more. Calvin and I discuss some of the new advancements in bike tech and how Park tools are trying to address the needs of bike mechanics on the cutting edge of tech with internal cable routing, carbon spokes and faster workshop turnaround.
00:11 – Interview with Calvin from @parktool
01:16 – Paul explains himself better about reaming DCR headsets
03:28 – 2nd question for Calvin, about Carbon spokes
07:35 – Look at Shimano Drop bar Cues
09:44 – Chat with Nic from @NicVieriMechanic
11:13 – Bargain alu wheels from M:Part
12:55 – Those pointless axle caps from @WheelsMfgCO

iconic shirt
So are they going to turn out a CUES R-8000 derailleur like they did for MTB? One that can use 11-43 0r 11-45 for 2X? Asking this because there is currently no 2×11 drop bar and the 46/32 14T capacity only works with 11-39. They did not get any real lower range like the GRX. So WTF? Why not a 46/30 set of cranks? Big disappointment. The group set maker Microshift got this right with SWORD 2×10 with a 46/29 crankset and a 11-38 cassette. Irritates the shit out of me. Only issue with SWORD is it's still mechanical brakes otherwise they managed to understand what SRAM and Shimano cannot quite get for older riders and hills or bikepackers and Tourers might really need for range and lower gear ratios.
Does anyone know if cues 11 speed is compatible with the "old" 105/ultegra/duraace stuff?
Thanks for the chat at the show Paul, always loved your content
10:00 lol Nic sounds weird on your mic
So cool to see just how much effort Shimano are still putting into more entry level stuff. Shows that they haven't forgotten what people actually want to buy.
I refuse to spend any money on a bike with hoses or cables running through the headset. Shame as every carbon bike now comes with this annoying feature. Guess I'll be sticking with my Fairlight Strael v3 for the time being.
Thanks to both of you
We should really stop calling them standards because you can’t have a standard if there’s more than one. We should refer to them as specifications!
This is the best coverage of Ice Bike I've seen. Really good. Thanks Mapdec.
CUES is the best thing that could happen to the bike industry atleast for the last 20 years.
thanks for the great info on the cues!
As soon as you make me very mad shitting my favorite brand than you go a make a video like this and make me like you again. Damn it! 🙂
I have a question: any chance you can ask Shimano or SRAM or Campi when will they figure out how to make a system that doesn’t require a complete bleed when working on fully integrated bikes or any bike for that matter. I know N22 has an adaptor for hydraulic cables(I think they do, I could be wrong.)
Whoever can come up with this tech will change the game.
None of the manufacturers talk to me any more so having to ask you and hoping you can ask them since looks like they are all there in same place. Cheers
I encountered the issue with 51.8 vs 52mm headset bearings this week building up a new bike. I tried just putting the bearing in the freezer for an hour and was able to hand-press it into the frame (I know it should be slip fit). Bearing still rotates very smoothly, is there any issue with what I've done?
NIC VIERI – yes what a guy, his YouTube is chillest place in the bike world
No please not machine built wheels.
We all know hand built is better
i called it when i saw it. cues is going to be an absolute game changer. and its nice to see guys that work on bikes that alot of customers we see would only ever dream about, get just as excited as us about it. 😀
Could you get a metal company to make you a custom 51.8mm reamer
Calvin is great!
At scorpion bike wheels we have a calibration jig that we use to find the TM-1 or digital meters, number for any spoke and tension in kgf
Get a lathe 😮
Calvin is a true bike hero. My 2005 copy of the Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair is what triggered my love of bicycles.
1:30 supposed to be 51.80, comes out at 51.73.
What a fucking mess too many standards and crap manufacturing!
As the happy owner of 10 very different bikes, 😄 I applaud and appreciate the manufacturers who still remember all those of us who are still riding bikes we already own and not shopping for the next one. Sometimes they forget… 🙄
So the new Cues road cranks are hollow forged like their MTB/105/GRX cranks? That's interesting. I guess that makes it a step above Tiagra (although Tiagra is 10 years old so not a fair comparison). Drop bar 11spd Cues feels more like a new generation of Tiagra we're not getting.
Sora and tiagra cranks are the same weight. The older 5 bolt ones weighed less that the current gen, so good that cues is going back that way.
I totally agree we need better quick connect/disconnects for hydraulic brake lines. Can't understand why we don't already. Rockshox Reverb dropper posts has an aftermarket "Connectamajig" (also made hy Rockshox) to disconnect the hydraulic hose. You might still need a minor bleed sometimes, but better than a messy full disconnect and new olive and hose barb.
Oh, Nic Vieri is everywhere, yeah 😀
Good on Wheels MFG. Took the criticism and ran with it, no hard feelings, that's a good message.
So excited for cues
Is that .2mm difference too big?
Creating a(nother) new standard that's 0.2mm different to an existing one? The bike industry is a circus
Cool to see my go-to bike shop owner on the channel, Nic is a very cool guy and Backyard Bike Shop is great.
On the topic of bearing sizes, are Bikone BSA bottom brackets using a normal 6805 bearing like Hambini and everyone else, or a funky proprietary bearing size (custom OD)?
Youre just trying to get me to move to the UK and apply for that job. Another great video!
I'm so glad i dont have to bother with these "improvements "
Calvin! The man, the legend!
10:52 What's wrong with Apex 1x??
12:14 Ruan Builds Wheels do some great stock alloy wheels for not much more
Im not buying any more shimano until they recall my R8000 chainset, they are still failing and keep seeing pics on strava of said broken crank arms
There is really no need to have any specific tools for internally routed headsets when perfectly good skips exist to just dump the frames.
Equally why make replacement bearings .. so long as they last 50 hrs just bin the frame when it’s time for a lowers service.
The Mapdec guy looks like Triathlon Dan lol
couldn't you put the reamer in a metal lathe and take 2 thousandths off on the radius
Hi, will the Cues derailleur work with a 105 11 speed shifter? It would be great to go 1x but without having to shell out for shifters…
I'm liking Shimano's path with group sets. Also, why have I never heard of M Part wheels?
Brilliant stuff. Park tools and Mapdec collaboration 👍👍
Omg, how do I get that shirt?
